Places reasonably close and worth a visit include:
- Bordeaux: 4th city of France, with International airport and T.G.V. terminus. (1 hour)
- Cognac: World centre of the Brandy industry. Good museums and interesting guided tours of the Distilleries. (1 hour)
- Périgueux: Ancient city and Principal town of the Dordogne, with extensive Roman ruins and splendid Cathedral. (1 hour)
- Libourne: Wealthy capital of the great wine-growing area of the Gironde. (40 mins)
- St. Emilion: Superbly preserved Medieval city, and the centre for the production of the famous wine of the same name. (40 mins)
- Aubeterre: Delightful Medieval town with extraordinary Monolithic church built entirely within a rock face. (20 mins)
Many visitors wish to visit, appreciate and absorb the atmosphere of the historic sites and monuments of the region. The most famous, Lascaux, Les Eyzies, Rocamador, Sarlat are two hours away and in the high summer the traffic can be infernal around these renowned places. Some fulfill these wishes whilst others opt for nearer sites of interest as there are several fascinating châteaux, caves and historic sites close by. Others just enjoy themselves at the lake, the busy local markets and the regional restaurants.
Presumably if you are thinking of coming to "Le Vignaud", you are not sea-side freaks, but you might just fancy a day out on the beach. The Atlantic coast beyond Bordeaux, big waves, sand dunes, takes about 1 ¾ hours to reach. The northern Gironde estuary, little waves and flat sandy beaches is about 1 ¼ hours away.
